Adobe integrates third-party AI models into Firefly for enhanced creative flexibility

Adobe is the San Jose-based company behind creative software like Photoshop and Premiere, but it is expanding its reach by integrating third-party image and video generation models into its Firefly AI service.

Firefly, which generates images and video clips based on text prompts, will now include the likes of OpenAI’s GPT image generation, Google Imagen 3, Google Veo 2, and Stability AI’s Flux 1.1 Pro. There’ll also be an upgraded version of Firefly itself.

While many customers are prioritising the commercial safety of Firefly, there’s a growing desire to experiment with other models for the sake of ideation, Ely Greenfield, Adobe’s Chief Technology Officer for digital media said.

Users will be able to seamlessly generate content with these third-party models and transfer it to Adobe’s applications. They’ll be able to do this using the same credit system. However, it’s not clear what the revenue-sharing arrangement will be.

After the news broke, Adobe’s share price rose by 1.88%.

Elsewhere, Adobe is planning a mobile version of Firefly for iOS and Android that’ll make the service available to more creatives on the go. The company also announced new AI models, including the Firefly Image Model 4 and Firefly Video Model, which is capable of generating hyper-realistic content while ensuring commercial safety.

As the competition heats up, especially from well-funded firms like OpenAI, Adobe is positioning itself as the central hub for all things generative and creative by offering safety with a side of flexibility.
