Bill Gates names three jobs safe from AI takeover: coders, biologists, and energy sector workers

In a recent appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, Bill Gates reiterated his belief that AI will take over many human jobs.
However, the Microsoft co-founder reckons there are still three professions that are relatively safe from the encroaching capabilities of generative AI and other machine learning technologies.
Coders, biologists, and energy sector professionals are the three jobs Gates believes will be around for the foreseeable future.
Gates says coders are needed to build the AI systems because AI isn’t yet flexible enough or able to solve problems in the way that humans can. He says human beings are still needed to debug and refine technology.
The biologist point is interesting too, because while AI can process huge amounts of data, it can’t yet make the creative and intuitive leaps that humans can. Gates says biologists will continue to be essential to scientific discovery and medical breakthroughs.
Finally, Gates says the energy sector is too complex for AI to take over yet. Humans are needed to think analytically and make decisions, especially in times of crisis.
Gates is generally optimistic about AI’s ability to create opportunities in a number of fields – including healthcare and education. However, he acknowledges the fears that people have about losing their jobs.
He says young people should see AI as a new frontier of opportunity – particularly in coding and innovation. And he reaffirmed that some jobs will likely never be taken by AI.
