ChatGPT to introduce a standard for connecting with third-party apps and data

ChatGPT is currently testing support for an open-source standard that would enable the AI to tap into third-party data to help complete tasks.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is designed to enable developers to expose that data, enabling AI systems like ChatGPT to make use of it.
In practice, that might mean enabling ChatGPT to link-up with an app like Gmail to pull-in relevant information to help with a user task.
While there might be limited applications for consumers, it could be a boon for enterprises looking to integrate internal tools with ChatGPT and share data as necessary.
As noted by Tibor on X, the ChatGPT web app is currently experimenting with a new “Connectors” setting that enables users to click on “Custom” to add a new tool.
Doing so brings up a form asking for the name, URL and description of the custom tool. That’ll enable ChatGPT to connect with your own personal apps or APIs.
Support for MCP is still being tested internally at OpenAI, but we’re expecting the company to make an announcement about the feature in the near future.
