Federal judge allows The New York Times to proceed with copyright lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft

A federal judge has ruled that The New York Times and other newspapers can move forward with a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft.
The media organisations are seeking to halt the use of their articles to train AI chatbots like ChatGPT.
U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein of New York has dismissed some of the claims put forward by the media organisations, but has allowed the vast majority of the case to proceed. That could lead to a jury trial.
The New York Times’ attorney Ian Crosby said he appreciated the thorough consideration Judge Stein gave to the case. He added: “As the order indicates, all of our copyright claims will continue against Microsoft and OpenAI for their widespread theft of millions of The Times’s works, and we look forward to continuing to pursue them.”
The ruling was also welcomed by Frank Pine, executive editor of MediaNews Group and Tribune Publishing. His newspapers are part of the consolidated lawsuit in Manhattan.
