OpenAI and Meta explore AI partnerships with Reliance Industries in India

OpenAI and Meta Platforms have held separate talks with Reliance Industries about boosting their AI offerings in the country, according to a new report.

The Information says the two tech giants have spoken to the Indian conglomerate about potential partnerships that could enhance their AI tools in the country.

One idea under consideration is a partnership between Reliance Jio and OpenAI to distribute ChatGPT, the report says. OpenAI has also considered slashing the price of the ChatGPT subscription to a few dollars per month, rather than the current $20, although it’s not clear whether this has been discussed with Reliance.

Reliance is also looking at selling OpenAI’s models to its enterprise customers via an API, while also offering to host and operate OpenAI models locally so that customer data from the region stays within India.

Reliance wants to run the Meta and OpenAI models from a three-gigawatt data centre – which will be the largest in the world – that’s planned for Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Reliance Industries is one of India’s largest conglomerates with interests in petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas exploration, telecommunications, retail and green energy.
